The HistoricalAttractionofRoadwaySettlements

Shirakawa has long been regarded as a gateway of Oshu which is a key area of the Japanese archipelago, Oshu, and played an important role both politically and for the military.A well-known representative of this is the Shirakawa Barrier. The historically significant position of Shirakawa is not only confirmed bythe existence of Shirakawa Barrier, but also from the fact that several roadways such as Aizu Roadway, Tanakura Roadway, Ishikawa Roadway and Mito Roadway were intercrossed with Shirakawa as a starting point at Edo period.

Along this historic road, there is still a village with a post town-like landscape, and various traditional events are held with the character of the locality, history and nature as its background. Representative ones include "Anchin Uta NembustuDance" in the Neda area along the Oshu Kaido, "Tokaichi Lantern Festival" in the Daishin area, Tokaichi district along Aizu Kaido, "Nakanosawa Gongen Bonten Festival" alongthe Tanakakura road,Omotegou Yanamori district. There is also “Kamako Bon Dance” in the eastern Kamako area where Ishikawa Kaido and Mito Kaido intersect. The traditional events held around these roadway settlements form good historical attractions in conjunction with the remains and various cultural assets.
